Once again I stumble blindly, and only am saved by the capricious nature of fate. Preterite have a new ep available. There is hope for 2013 yet. It is a digital only release, and can be purchased via their bandcamp page for the minuscule sum of $3 canadian. I will freely confess to being somewhat of an anachronism and so feel a small sense of loss at not having a tangible object that I can hold in my hand. But the world turns and I am a pragmatist. Good things can arrive by any means, and one has to be ready. And Mr Hamilton and Miss Beaulieu produce good things. Very good things indeed. The ep consists of two tracks only recently recorded, and shows Preterite moving beyond the dense sonic ritual of “Pillar of Winds” into a more expansive and contemplative landscape, but still with an underlying complexity. This can even be seen in the accompanying artwork. Whereas “Pillar of Winds” was dark, cloudy and geometric, “Remembrancer” is almost exultant, with the sun bursting out of the sky illuminating a tumultuous sea. The music itself has a more open feel. The primary instruments are guitar and piano, and are used simply to elegantly frame the idiosyncratic voice of Miss Beaulieu. You can hear it below, and I can only encourage you to go to the Bandcamp page and download it. This ep is only making me want to hear “From the Wells” even more. According to the Preterite Facebook page (I rarely even go near Facebook, it terrifies me), it is only available telepathically currently. As yet, much concentration has yielded no results. Maybe I need a haircut.

Loosely connected to the extended Beta-Lactam Ring family are Preterite whose debuting “Pillar of Winds” full length was at one point enthused about highly by the label and was due to appear on the imprint only to decamp at the last minute to Handmade Birds Records where it eventually appeared in a limited run of 500 copies at the tail end of 2011. One of the finest debuts we’ve had the pleasure of hearing in a long while, in fact I’m not even rightly sure whether we actually have a finished copy ourselves. That aside we’ve eyed a new 2 track EP release from the duo — incidentally Menace Ruine’s Genevieve Beaulieu and Nebris’ James Hamilton gathered together on extra curricular duties — being sneaked out digitally by the name of “Remembrancer”. A lot lighter in texture and mood than their debut it should be said “Don’t Ask for the Moon when we Have the Stars” is carved and cradled in ancient sonic tongues whose blood line draws to navigate a path plotted by the joining of the faint dots that guide and as where gathering of sun bleached John Fahey codas, Nico wooziness and Mellow Candle enchantment. All said pride of the brace is the simply beautified “Remembrancer” — elegantly steeled to a sparse key braid, there’s a solemn tenderness and a hollowing classicism that chills to a Dead Can Dance-like majesty within which unfurls a delicate sigh of inner turbulence, drama and solitude. Filme mit Bette Davis wirken aus heutiger Sicht so wundersam fern. In "Die Reise aus der Vergangenheit" ("Now, Voyager") erlebt man sie in einer Paraderolle. Dort fiel auch einer der großen Sätze des früheren Kinos: "Oh, Jerry don´t let`s ask for the moon. We have the stars." Wenn eine Band PRETERITE heißt, scheint eine Einleitung, die sich dem Vergangenen widmet, naheliegend. Das kanadische Duo, bestehend aus der betörenden Geneviève Beaulieu und dem Soundmagier James Hamilton, brachte im letzten Jahr mit ihrer Handmade Birds-Veröffentlichung "Pillar Of Winds" den inneren Haushalt vieler Hörer kräftig durcheinander. Ihre bisweilen stehend wirkenden Sounds und Genevièves unikater Gesang hievten sie nicht nur in die diversen Favoritenlisten des vergangenen Jahres, sie sorgten auch für Staunen, Respektbekundungen und am allerbesten - für entrückte, schwärmerische Ausdrücke in den Gesichtern ihrer Hörer.
Da nimmt es schon fast ein wenig Wunder, dass dieser Tage bereits ein Nachfolger von "Pillar Of Winds" angekündigt worden ist. Da laut Genevièves Aussage, nur jene, die über telepathische Fähigkeiten verfügen, ins aktuelle Album reinhören können, und die Zahl jener, die über dererlei Fertigkeiten gebieten, wohl sehr überschaubar ist, musste ein anderes Verfahren her, um die Wartezeit auf das wohl bald kommende "From The Wells" abzukürzen. Kurzerhand entschlossen sich PRETERITE also, eine Vorab-EP, die ausschließlich als Download über Bandcamp angeboten wird, zu veröffentlichen: "Remembrancer". Den Auftakt bildet "Don´t Ask For The Moon When We Have The Stars". Ob dabei Bette Davis beliehen wurde oder eine andere Quelle, kann hier nicht letztgültig geklärt werden. Gleichwohl schmiegt sich das Zitat aus dem über 70 Jahre alten Film an den Bandnamen und die Haltung des Duos.
Schließlich zeigt sich in Genevièves Ausnahmeorgan immer noch so vieles, was gleich einer fast vergessenen Weise urplötzlich heranweht und im Moment des Eintreffens sofort in den Bann zu schlagen weiß. Immer noch pendelt sie den gesamten Bereich von Gelassenheit, Feierlichkeit, Erhabenheit, Verträumtheit, Weitläufigkeit, Tiefe und Höhe aus, scheint dabei auch immer noch sich als die Intonierende mit hinein zu ziehen. Auf "Remembrancer" bleibt dies natürlich, jedoch scheint Geneviève noch konzentrierter, noch eindringlicher, noch entrückter, fast so, als würde sie nach dem Einsinken in Hamiltons Kompositionen über sich selbst hinaus geschleudert. Von hoch droben singt sie. Wenn Hamilton komponiert, meint man, dass da jemand mit neuen Tafeln von seinem Sinai gestiegen ist. Die Instrumentierung bleibt akustisch, die Gitarrensounds fangen bei "Don`t Ask For The Moon When We Have The Stars" ein und liefern trotz ihrer unglaublichen Dichte und Melodienführung doch nur den Rahmen zu Genevièves Gesang.
Der zweite Track trägt den gleichen Titel wie die EP. "Remembrancer" basiert auf Genevièves Gesang und dem sie begleitenden Piano. Hier öffnet sich eine Tür zu einer neuen Seite PRETERITEs. Zum kraftvollen Vortrag gesellt sich so eine Zartheit, der Kontrast zwischen beiden gleicht dabei einer dritten Ebene. Würdevoll und weihevoll zeitigt das Stück einen wolligen Schauer und zeigt so, dass es noch genügend verzauberte Nischen in unser Gegenwart gibt. Erst zum Trackende zieht die Kemençe ihre weitläufigen und großzügigen Schwünge und ein Gemisch aus Anziehung, Reiz, Kitzel und Anmut verdeutlicht, welch Impulsgeber Hamilton ist, bezeugt erneut, dass Geneviève ein Synonym für Grandezza ist.
